Classification:

Anthophysa  Bory   1822;  6 of 10 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Chromulinales;  Family Chromulinaceae.

Morphology:

Colonies of colorless biflagellate cells with a large nucleus, a leucoplast and up to 3 contractile vacuoles, on branched stalks.  Protoplasmic strands extend into the stalk from each cell.

Phagocytosis, especially bacteria, anywhere along the cell membrane.  Exocytosis of undigested particles near base of cell (Ibid., from H.R. Preisig).

Similar genera:

Individual cells cannot be distinguished from Spumella (Ibid.).
